A Bible verse about planning:
“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” Proverbs 27:1
I am incredibly guilty of this, and I think we all are. We make plans for the day, plans for next week, plans for next month or even plans for years down the road. Like the saying goes, God laughs at our plans.
That’s not because He’s some devious schemer; it’s because our plans are so little compared to His. Were He to allow us to complete our plans, we might be missing out on so much more.
I’m currently “planning” to build an addition to our house. In reality, we’re building an entirely new house and connecting to the existing one. It’s going to be a huge undertaking.
I was hoping to be able to hire contractors for this project, but because of the cost, there’s no way we can afford it. So we have to build it ourselves.
Since this is such a large undertaking, there’s a significant amount of time that will be spent planning. Beams and timbers need to be sized accordingly. The design of the house itself needs to fulfill our needs and wants.
I don’t think that God has a problem with that. It’s when we say something like, “Today I’m going to….” I don’t think that the point is for us to sit idly and wait for God to deliver us unto the day. It’s a fine line to tread.
Either we plan for the day and attempt to fulfill our plans, or we wait for God to tell us what to do.
The truth is that it should be some sort of a compromise.
By that, I mean we should plan, but we should be open to changing those plans. When things don’t go our way or something intervenes, we need to be flexible.
If we stubbornly hold to our plans, we will be unable to see and understand when God provides us a greater opportunity.
I’m hopeful that if I remain open to His plan, there will still be a way for us to hire contractors to build our house. In the meantime, there’s still planning as a backup option.
