Read Our Story

Hi, I’m Aaron, the primary author at the French River Co.  Thank you for taking the time to check out our page!  Our whole story began several years ago when my wife, Bre and I began dating.  As our relationship grew we came to the realization that city life was no longer meant for us.  I had grown up in the country and we both began longing for the peace and solitude as the self-sufficient opportunities that being a landowner could provide.  We wanted to farm, and garden, and explore, and play, and most importantly, raise a family in a place that was sacred and special to us.  That began our drive to rid ourselves of debt and search for property.

The parcel that we ended up purchasing was one that I had admired ever since I was a child.  It was near to my father, which was a big priority for us, and in the area that I grew up.  Our story is the entire process of getting out of debt, purchasing the land, building a cabin, building our home, and building the entire homestead.  Along the way we’ll discuss life events that occur, topics that we’re interested in, and the direction that our homestead is headed.

The overall goal for this website is to document our journey so that one day we can share it with our children.  Building a homestead from scratch is a lot of meaningful work, and I truly believe that it’s an endeavor that should not be taken lightly.  It’s  a story that should be proclaimed, and I am continually impressed with others who have done so.  Secondly, I am hoping that others might be inclined to follow our journey, and follow in our footsteps to their own homesteading adventures.  With the way things are in the world, I believe that a path towards a simpler, richer, self-sustaining lifestyle is the healthiest thing anyone can do for their family.  I hope to reward you with useful information on the decisions we make for educational purposes.

We live in northern Minnesota with our two wonderful fur-babies, Koda and Kashi.  I do also run a YouTube channel, French River Co, in which I do accompanying videos to my posts.  Furthermore, you can find us on Facebook at the French River Co.  If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know as that will help shape the course of the content that we provide.  Thanks!
