Finally, after years of research, planning, saving, and more planning, we were ready to begin construction.  The slab had been poured, the plans that we had designed  were printed, all of our materials had been delivered, the sun was shining and I was ready to embark on our greatest adventure to date – building our own home.

We designed the house for ease of construction since we would be building it ourselves.  We also kept the design minimal for aesthetics and for financial reasons.  Lastly, we kept it small to force us outdoors and to save from unnecessary costs.  Now, all we had to do was build it. (more…)

It’s been quite some time since I’ve been able to share regular content.  The fact of the matter is that I’ve been super busy with two very important tasks.  First, I’ve spent the past year growing an iconic mustache, much to Bre’s dismay.  More importantly, we’ve been building our own home.  In some of the past posts I’ve discussed different aspects of the build as we were planning and getting underway, but since hammer met nail I’ve not had the time or energy to keep up with it.  However, I did record my daily progress so that I can bring more detailed information about the build as it came together.   (more…)

Hey everyone – it’s been quite some time since I’ve written anything.  7 months to be exact.  I browsed through the last post that I wrote, and it’s hard to believe that we had just poured our slab.  If you’ve been following the posts on our Facebook page, you’ll know that we’ve been busy during that time building our house.  In the last post I had mentioned that I was hopeful we’d be receiving an offer on our house.  A lot has changed since then, but let’s take a look at some of the highlights from the past year and also look ahead to what’s coming up for us. In the last post I talked about how Bre and I were going to be ordering our materials on Friday and everything was roses and unicorns.  That all came crashing back to reality today.  This is, in part, due to the low appraisal that I talked about, and comes full circle to my distrust and loathing of banks.   (more…)

Or, at least it will be after tomorrow.  I jumped the gun a little bit in that previous post when I said that our slab was ready for pouring.  What I meant was, the site prep was done and the forms were in.  Today, however, we also had the plumber come out and put in the waste lines and everything else that will be buried in the slab.  Tomorrow, the concrete contractor will be laying foam and rebar.  Then, we’ll be ready for pouring the slab – we’ll just have to wait for good weather.   (more…)
