“What did you want to be when you were a kid?” It’s a common question people ask each other. Often, I say that I never really knew, and I still don’t. But that’s not entirely true. Let me share my secret with you.
My first memory of wanting to be a profession was wanting to be a major league baseball player. I remember fondly watching the Twins on my parent’s wood console TV. I was enamored with baseball, and I spent all year practicing for the few months that I’d get to play Little League. My dad always reminded me that it was a long shot for me to make it, but I thought I would defy the odds.
Of course I didn’t, otherwise I probably wouldn’t be writing this today. The only other thing that I can remember wanting to be was a writer. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to read. I’m incredibly thankful of my parents for instilling this in me, whether it was inherent or guided. My mom would bring me to the library, and I’d have half of the books read by week’s end. Dad and I would read his collection of the Hardy Boy novels.
I always thought it would be incredible to have people read what I wrote. Not for an ego trip; but to be considered an expert as something, so knowledgeable, that people would sacrifice their time to read your thoughts. This thought occurred to me later on in high school I think, and it was killed in college.
My first english composition class killed the concept of becoming a writer; not because it was too difficult, but because of the rules. I loathe rules when it comes to creation. My college photography classes taught me “rules to follow” for correct composition. Placing rules on creation prohibits new thoughts, ideas and expression. The same thing applies to literary rules.
Sure, grammar is important. But sentence structure, syntax, etc. Let me write the way that I want to (which I do now, to my college comp professors dismay, I’m sure).
I’m telling you all of this, because in a previous post I mentioned a second source of income revenue that I’m about to pursue. Surprise! I’m going to write a book!
Well, an ebook anyways. Using some things that I learned while being a zoning administrator, I am hoping to compile an ebook regarding real estate. This is kind of an experiment for me to see if this is a worthwhile endeavor. Granted, different topics will elicit different responses. That said, I think that this topic is worthy of conversation because a lot of people are interested in it, and I have a unique perspective to share.
So that’s my big surprise – I’m going to write an ebook. I wanted to share this with you all for two reasons. First, by publicly stating it, I’m hoping that it will keep me focused and accountable. Secondly, it might be a topic that you’re interested in. If so, let me know and I’ll be sure to sprinkle in updates as to my progress.
