Snow Boss 500 Rebuild

This snowblower rebuild was a lot of fun. I got to try some new things – mainly a paint restoration as well as valve tuning. There were a few hiccups, but in this video you can see how it all turned out.

Tools used in this video:

Milwaukee M18 Impact Drill/Driver Combo

If you haven’t read or seen the video for part 1, here’s a link. In the first part, we diagnosed a stuck valve and repaired it. We lapped the valves and ground the stems for spec clearances. Then we cleaned the carburetor and put it all back together to ensure that it would run.

The delay in between the two parts was due to me ordering some new parts for this machine.

Parts that I Ordered for this Snowblower Rebuild

  • A new drive belt
  • Driveshaft bearings
  • Gearcase seals
  • Belt cover shroud (although this part has yet to arrive)
  • I also replaced the engine oil and gearbox oil
  • New paint

I spent a whopping $1.20 to purchase this machine, and I’ve got around $80 in the aforementioned parts. If this was in the fall before winter I think that I could sell it for $250-$300 given the repairs and maintenance that I’ve performed. That said, I think I’m going to list it for $250 and accept as low as $200. I think that’s fair.

That return isn’t incredible, but it’s still over 100% of my investment. That pales in comparison to the experience and knowledge that I gained in this snowblower rebuild. Plus, I had a ton of fun doing it.

We still have four more snowblowers to repair, and my plan is to try to do one more snowblower rebuild for this month’s snowblower theme. By the way, you’re all welcome; since I decided that the theme for this month would be snowblowers, we’ve hardly had any snow!
