How to Build a Simple, Elegant Desk with Reclaimed Lumber

building a desk

Building a desk was high on my priority list this year. I wanted a dedicated work space for editing videos and writing my posts. While it’s convenient to have a laptop for working in different places, it’s also unproductive in the sense that you can’t get used to working in a dedicated space. By building a desk, I hoped to resolve that. It took a little longer than I thought it would, but we finished it.

Tools used in this video:

DeWalt table saw

Materials used in this video:

West System epoxy

Trans Tint dye

This desk was built with reclaimed lumber from an old grain elevator that collapsed a few years back. I had been saving the lumber for some time and waiting for the right project to use it on. This was the perfect candidate.

The wood itself is old growth white pine. It has very tight grain, something that you can’t find at today’s big box stores. Using lumber like this is night and day difference in your building projects. The tight growth makes it much easier to work with and a much more enjoyable experience.

Building a desk was a lot of fun for me. Mostly because I knew that at the end of it I would have a product that got a lot of use. But also because it gave me a chance to work on a project for the simple enjoyment of it.

A lot of the projects I had been doing recently were things that I had to do. Building a desk was the first thing I had done in awhile where it was something I wanted to do. Check out the video, and let me know what you think!
