Problems: Opportunities I am Grateful For

problems

“So be glad – yes, actually glad that you have problems. Be grateful for them as implying that God has confidence in your ability to handle these problems with which He has ENTRUSTED you. Adopt this attitude toward problems, and it will tend to siphon off the depression you may have developed from a negative reaction toward them.” – Norman Vincent Peale.

That excerpt comes from a book I just finished reading, entitled Positive Thinking For a Time Like This, by Norman Vincent Peale. I have referenced him several times through the life of this blog, and his timeless pieces remain a fixture in my daily life. Today, however, was the first time that I truly gained this perspective. I have read several of his books, and I understand the wisdom that a positive mindset can bring. But, to truly be thankful for my problems? That was a new one.

It does make sense, however, when you think about it. “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength but with your testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

With my problems, God is testing me

God wants me to be successful. I talked about that in my last post. However, I need to be ready to receive His providence. That only comes when I have proven to be up to the challenge. Or, more likely, when I have proven myself to be worthy.

So now I need to rephrase the entire dynamic of my perspective. Instead of seeing the problem, I need to see the opportunity that is presented.

Each problem is a chance to build my CHARACTER.

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 5: 3-4.

By facing my problems, the end result is that I build my personal character and hope. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I will get what I want. It simply means that I will be better off in the long run. I do believe that it’s the only way to truly appreciate what you’ve gained.

Every problem is an opportunity to prove yourself; to grow yourself. It’s hard to think that way in the midst, but the fact remains. At the end of the problem, and there will be an end – one way or another, you will be changed. Either for the better or for the worse – that part is up to you and me.

How we receive the lessons we are meant to learn, how we develop our character and build our perseverance, that is what truly matters.

Or, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” And I sure like lemonade.
